Soothing Babies at Birth and Beyond
For infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (also called NAS), our mission is to provide a non-pharmacological solution to sooth and comfort even when NICU nurses are not able to hold them. Babies going through NAS suffer from gastrointestinal dysfunction, temperature instability, and central nervous system problems, such as tremors, high-pitched crying, and seizures. The latest national data from 2014 indicate that one baby is born with signs of NAS every 15 minutes in the United States.
Our Commitment to Babies
We’re extremely proud to be partnering with hospitals to help make NICU stays easier for infants born with NAS, as well as their caregivers and healthcare providers. By donating Dream Weighted Swaddles for use in the NICU, our goal is to offer a safe and soothing solution while reducing the amount of medicines needed to treat and manage withdrawal symptoms.
"I created Dreamland Baby™ after I couldn't find a weighted blanket my 6-month old could safely wear. During my safety research I uncovered weighted blankets can serve as an incredible non-pharmacological solution for infants born with NAS. Our Dream Weighted Swaddles can be used in conjunction with traditional medicines to allow babies to be safely soothed while receiving less medications and go home sooner. Our goal is to be in 100 hospitals by the end of 2021"
– Tara Williams, Dreamland Baby™ founder
Why Dreamland Baby For the NICU?
Dreamland Baby™ was invented to help infants feel calm, fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The gentle weight harnesses the power of deep touch stimulation. The evenly distributed weight simulates the feeling of being held or hugged.
A recent pilot study concluded weighted blankets are a safe intervention to use with infants with NAS. When weighed blankets were used, infant's heart rate decreased and Finnegan scores decreased. Read the full publication here.
With a rise in opioid addiction nationwide and subsequent increase in neonatal drug abuse exposure, reliance on inexpensive and easy-to-use nonpharmacologic interventions is imperative.
"I have personally observed the calm and comfort Dreamland Baby™ provides infants with NAS, when used as directed. Heart rate and Finnegan scores significantly decreased with weighted blankets, compared to non-weighted blankets. This is a cost effective, non-pharmacological solution every NICU should consider."
– Virginia Summe, NICU RN at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, OH.

They do this by providing education on healthy coping mechanisms, positive reinforcement and by utilizing bedtime comfort items to empower children to self-comfort and focus on their dreams.
The Superhero Project
The Superhero Project works to assist families with babies born prematurely and residing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.
